Kayla Rae Hathaway, a St. Petersburg native, is a 2011 graduate of Stetson University College of Law. While in law school, Ms. Hathaway was a member of the prestigious Phi Delta Phi legal honors society and was on the honor roll. Ms. Hathaway attended law school on a full merit scholarship which was awarded based on her merit in both college GPA and LSAT score. This scholarship is awarded to only a few members of each starting class. In law school Ms. Hathaway was a certified legal intern with the City of St. Petersburg Legal Department and was able to practice law under the supervision of a practicing attorney. She also held positions as a law clerk with the law firm Di Vito & Higham, P.A., and the Department of Children and Families. Prior to law school, Ms. Hathaway graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of South Florida in Tampa, majoring in communication. She is an alumna of Chi Omega sorority and as an active member she served on chapter's board as Pan-Hellenic Delegate, Personnel Chair and Recruitment Chair.
At Rice & Rose Ms. Hathaway's concentration is on DUI defense litigation, employment law, and general practice. She previously served as a Dependency Attorney for the Florida Department of Children and Families and most recently was a Felony Trial Lawyer with the Seventh Circuit State Attorney’s Office. Ms. Hathaway has extensive trial experience and has handled thousands of cases including the termination of parental rights, DUI, burglary, drug charges, aggravated battery and homicide.
Ms. Hathaway is serving in leadership positions within the Volusia County Bar Association and is the current president of the Volusia County Bar Young Lawyers Division. As president of the Young Lawyers Division she has been integral in the formation of the first YLD board of directors for the Volusia County Bar Association. In 2014 Ms. Hathaway was a co-recipient of the "Best Grant Presentation" award at the Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division Affiliate Outreach Conference. She is a member of the Volusia Flagler Association for Women Lawyers and has previously served as the Communications Director for the organization. Ms. Hathaway is a member of the National College for DUI Defense, the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Florida Bar Labor and Employment Law Section.
Ms. Hathaway lives in New Smyrna Beach with her husband. She is a practitioner of Vinyasa style yoga, enjoys paddle boarding, traveling and spending time with her family. Her father-in-law is current New Smyrna Beach Mayor Jim Hathaway.
